Moderate Grazer Density Stabilizes Forage Availability More Than Patch Burning in Low-Stature Grassland

چکیده

Spatially patchy fire creates landscape-level diversity that in turn stabilizes several rangeland ecosystem services, including forage production and habitat availability. To enhance biodiversity livestock production, efforts are underway to restore regimes rangelands throughout the Great Plains. However, invasive species such as tall fescue Schedonorus arundinaceus syn. Festuca arundinacea, initially introduced for hamper prescribed use. Grazer density, or stocking rate, modulates effect of on ecological patterns invaded, semi-natural pastures. We compare three diversity–stability responses—temporal variability aboveground plant biomass, portfolio effects among functional groups, beta group composition—in pastures managed with two different through periods heavy, light, moderate rate southern Iowa, USA. Pastures were either burned patches, one-third pasture each year, completely every third year. The period grazer density had least temporal regardless regime. also found statistical evidence a under stocking, where diversification communities varying cover groups can stabilize by reducing year-to-year variability. Beta was greatest during well. short stature prevented patch-burning regime create contrast vegetation structure there no difference any mechanism response across burning. Although longitudinal, these data suggest biomass declines mechanisms underlie function. Our results support decades-old principle range management: grazing intensity enhances stability, which has been shown buffer shortfalls drought.

Habitat Availability Is a More Plausible Explanation than Insecticide Acute Toxicity for U.S. Grassland Bird Species Declines

Grassland bird species have experienced substantial declines in North America. These declines have been largely attributed to habitat loss and degradation, especially from agricultural practices and intensification (the habitat-availability hypothesis). A recent analysis of North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) "grassland breeding" bird trends reported the surprising conclusion that insecti...

Crop/Forage/Soil Management/Grassland Utilization

For the long-term sustainability of the dairy industry in the Northeastern USA, manure nutrient application rates should not exceed crop nutrient removal once aboveoptimum soil fertility levels are reached. Dairy producers have shown a growing interest in brown midrib (BMR) forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.) · sudangrass (Sorghum sudanense Piper) hybrids (S · S) as a more environment...

Aerobic high-intensity intervals improve VO2max more than moderate training.

PURPOSE The present study compared the effects of aerobic endurance training at different intensities and with different methods matched for total work and frequency. Responses in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), stroke volume of the heart (SV), blood volume, lactate threshold (LT), and running economy (CR) were examined. METHODS Forty healthy, nonsmoking, moderately trained male subjects were...

Burning in a New Zealand Snow-tussock Grassland: Effects on Soil Microbial Biomass and Nitrogen and Phosphorus Availability

Although fire is a controversial management tool in New Zealand tussock grasslands, it can be an important factor in their pastoral use (Basher, Meurk and Tate, 1990). Its effects on various properties of these ecosystems have, consequently, been widely studied. Most biochemical studies of the effects of burning on grassland soils have concentrated on the availability of nutrient elements, espe...

Mutations in pregnancy‐associated plasma protein A2 cause short stature due to low IGF‐I availability

Mutations in multiple genes of the growth hormone/IGF-I axis have been identified in syndromes marked by growth failure. However, no pathogenic human mutations have been reported in the six high-affinity IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) or their regulators, such as the metalloproteinase pregnancy-associated plasma protein A2 (PAPP-A2) that is hypothesized to increase IGF-I bioactivity by specific ...
